The rugby that was played in the Australian competition this weekend actually surprised me. In the past when there was an Australian derby I would try to watch it but would usually fall asleep halfway through, but this week was very different.
Reds vs Waratahs:
This was the game that started the comp and what a way to kick of. From the outset their was a bit of niggle in the game and even though the people in rugby don’t like that it does make the game interesting to watch. The game went the one way then the other with no team running away with it. At the end the reds got the win and I thought that they deserved it. One of the players that caught my eye was Lachlan Swinton the hits that he had put in was great to watch he was for me the stand out player of the Waratahs. It was good to see that there are still players with hunger in their belly to get that gold jersey on their shoulders come international rugby time.
I believe the reason the Reds won the game was because of the dominance that their teams forward pack had on the game. They demolished the Waratahs up front at scrum time and that is why they got the first yellow card handed to the Tahs.
Brumbies vs Rebels:
This game was also a good game, but it was dominated by the boot of the kickers and the line out of the Brumbies. I don’t think that there was ever a chance for the rebels to win even though they came close at the end when they started running with the ball. The Brumbies have laid their marker on the competition and I cant see a team that is going to win them so that is one thing that this comp is missing.
Week 1 wrap up:
I think that all in all it was a better week than what I expected from their week one. One of the new rules that I found dumb is the 22-50 and 50-22. I just believe that their reason to do this was to make the game better flowing and get more running into the game, but it has done the opposite now a;l the teams are just looking to place a good kick and put up a driving mall.
